Seeking City Council Support
Together Place, a Bangor peer recovery center, has closed its day space and diner after a funding shortfall and is now seeking $63,000 from the Bangor City Council to reopen. Executive Director Joseph Hartel stated the organization needs $220,000 total, having raised over $156,000 so far. Councilor Susan Faloon suggested using unused opioid settlement funds, while Councilor Carolyn Fish argued the city should not bear the responsibility.
Community Impact
The closure has increased demand on local services, including the Bangor Area Homeless Shelter, which reported at least 200 unsheltered individuals. Boyd Kronholm, shelter director, emphasized the need for additional resources. Hartel hopes the council will vote on funding at its Sept. 14 meeting, with a fundraising link available on Together Place's website.
